Palestinian Extremist Call for Riots

Responding to a call from Islamic militant leaders urging their followers to defend Jerusalem against “Jewish conquest,” several hundred stone-throwing Arab youths rioted and threw stones, rocks and fire bombs at the police on the Temple Mount Compound and parts of the Old City on October 25. Twice, regular police and Border Police had to go onto the Mount firing water cannon and stun grenades to ensure order. These spurious calls by Arab leaders that Jewish extremists are planning to harm the holy site have been used many times in the past. There have been repeated rumors among Palestinians that Jewish extremists are planning on harming the holy site. No such attempt has been made, or contemplated. Several bus loads of Arabs coming from the north of Israel on October 25 were stopped by police and turned back.

The Temple Mount was later closed to both Arab and Jewish visitors and several arrests made of senior Palestinian officials, including Mahmoud Abbas’s adviser on Jerusalem affairs, Hatam Abd al-Qadir, on suspicion of disorderly conduct. Police said he attacked officers and urged worshippers to hold a protest march. There is anger by many Jews that Islamic militants regard the Temple Mount as only an Islamic holy preserve, completely ignoring the fact that the Solomon’s First Temple was built on the Temple Mount some 1,500 years before even the introduction of Islam. The present disturbances are entirely politically motivated to prevent any chance of Israel and the Palestinians coming to a reasonable settlement on the future of the region. As soon as there seems that there might be some progress in the direction of a settlement the militant Palestinians start fomenting civil unrest.
